Urgent Appeal – Support the Aid Target Bill

Dear Friend of NE-CAP,

PLEASE ASK YOUR MP TO ATTEND PARLIAMENT THIS FRIDAY, AND TO SUPPORT THE AID TARGET BILL.

It’s really easy for you to do so!

Last year the UK Government made good on a promise we made to the UN over 40 years ago. We’re the first of the G8 countries to spend 0.7% of our budget on international development aid – that’s 99.3% for us and 0.7% for the poorest people in the world! But it can be the difference between life and death for millions of people. [See below for proof positive.]

We now have the chance to enshrine this 0.7% aid target in law. That’s exactly what MPs have the opportunity to support this Friday – BUT ONLY IF ENOUGH OF THEM TURN UP TO PARLIAMENT!

The Aid Target Bill has had huge support up until now. But it could falldown at the final hurdle – a massive setback. You can help make sure this doesn’t happen.

FIND THE NAME OF YOUR MP at www.writetothem.com – simply type in your postcode.

WRITE BY EMAIL:

Your MP’s email address is as follows: firstname.surname.mp@parliament.uk

[So my MP’s address is: alan.campbell.mp@parliament.uk]

State your name, postal address, postcode and email address.

SAY SOMETHING LIKE: “Please turn up in Parliament this Friday and support

the Aid Target Bill. It’s had huge support up until now, but it could fall

down at the final hurdle – a massive setback. Please play your part in

making sure this doesn’t happen.”

Conclude by asking for a response and add the usual courtesies.

WRITE BY POST, first class, today or tomorrow:

Send your letter to “House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA”;

Include your name, postal address, postcode and email address;

Type or write by hand, saying something like:

“Please turn up in Parliament this Friday and support the Aid Target Bill.

It’s had had huge support up until now, but it could fall down at the final

hurdle – a massive setback. Please play your part in making sure this

doesn’t happen.”

Conclude by asking for a response and add the usual courtesies.

Many thanks for your support!

Dr David Golding CBE, Development Coordinator

PROOF POSITIVE: In 1990, 12.7 million children under five died needlessly each year, but by last year, the number was 6.2 million, a reduction of over 50%. Progress on this scale has never been seen before in the history of humanity! [And anyone who thinks this could have been achieved without debt relief and aid is delusional.] But 17,000 children dying needlessly every day is 17,000 too many – let it not continue with our meek acquiescence!

[Data published each year by UNICEF and the World Health Organisation.]
